McCain on Haspel
John McCain’s statement after the Senate confirmation hearing for Gina Haspel as director of the Central Intelligence Agency:
“I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense. However, Ms. Haspel’s role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing. Her refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying. I believe the Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination.”

It is debatable whether what was done was torture – although I would not volunteer to be a subject! Regardless, it was approved by the President and the Senate before it was done. She was acting at the direction of the same people who are now criticizing her! There is plenty of blame to go around. Ms. Haspel will not say that it was the wrong thing to do at the time, but she has said that she would not do it now or in the future. Please keep in mind that information was obtained through these techniques that directly led to the elimination of Osama bin Laden and probably saved numerous lives, maybe yours and mine. Gina Haspel has had an outstanding career and is the most qualified person to lead the CIA and should be confirmed.
